SUGAR SCANDALS.
CLEANING-UP IN TOKIO. ' By Telegraph.— Prcsj Association.— Copyright TOKIO, 10th May. v In connection with the sugar scandals which have been agitaiing political circles lately many arrests have been made. It is stated that the sugar company spent 120,000 yen (£12,000) in bribing fifty deputies (several of whom are under suspension) to secure the nationalisation of its business. It is not considered probable that the Constitutional party, which controls the majority in the Diet, will rally from . the blow. The public applaud the Government's energy, believing that the exposure will have a satisfactory effect in commercial circles. Nine Deputies, we were informed a few weeks ago, had been arrested on charges of bribery in connection with the Japan Sugar Company. The scandal cau&ed a great fall in shares, and many persons were ruined.
