LAWRENCE-ROXBURG RAILWAY.
DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER. CANNOT GO ON WITHOUT A GUARANTEE. [BT TELEGKAFH — FBBSS ASSOCIATION.! DUNEDIN, This Day. Sir Joseph Ward to-day told a deputation, which urged the completion of the Roxburgh-Lawrence railway, that the Cabinet had considered the question of irrigation in Central Otago, the Law-rence-Roxburgh Hne, and the Otago Central Railway in conjunction. The Government of the day had been forced into the prosecution of the Otago Central line on promises that it would be revenue-earning ; now other railways were being saddled with the Otago Central's deficiency. He hinted at the probability of the imposition of a highor railway rate in Otago in justice to the other railways of the Dominion. The Government, added the Premier, was willing to build the Roxburgh railway if the people of the district were prepared to guarantee the difference between the interest on cost of construction and the revenue returns. The responsibility was too great for the Government to sanction further prosecution of the work without consulting Parliament.
