NEW ZEALAND RECORD BEATEN. THORNDON CLUB. The final for the Thorndon Club's 100 yards handicap race, in which much interest has been taken, in local swimming circles, was decided at the Thorndon. Baths last night. The following competitors faced the starter : — A. W. Smith 22fcc, J. NeLson 16sec, D. M'Leod 12sec, R. Ronayne l._sec, F. Roberts l^sec, and R. Healy scratch. Interest centred in the three last named men. Roberts set the pace for the first 50 yards, and turned! about a yardi ahead of Ronayne, with Healy not far behind. Roberts maintained his lead', however, despite Ronayne's big effort to reduce the gap, and' thus won the race by about a yard from the latter. Healy was third. All three competitors got within tha New Zealandl record (644-ssec) for the distance, the times being : Roberts 62 4-ssec, Ronayne 63 2-ssec, Healy *64 sec. These tiraes cannot, however, be accepted as records, as the baths are nine inches short of 50 yards. As a result of his win Roberts (19) wins the Ward Challenge Cup. Healy (13) comes next, with Ronayno (11) third. SWIFTS' CLUB. The Swifte' Club decided a 440 yards' handicap at Te Aro last evening with the following result: — W. G. Morpeth, 125 sec, 1; £. Scott, lOOsec, 2; B. C. Freyberg, scr, 3. Also started — C. Aston 105 sec, \V. E. Wilton 95sec, F. Delaney 95sec, B. O'Neill 45sec, E. E. Jenkinson 40sec, C. M. Ward 35sec. Time, Bmin lOsec. Freyberg's time was equal to the New Zealandl record (6min Bsec).
