BUTTER AND CHEESE.
EXPORTS BY ATHENIC. The White Star liner Athenic, which left for London yesterday, took away butter and cheese to the value of nearlj £110,000. The vajue of the butter vs.£51,230, at the rat* of lOJd per lb pc box of s&lbs, arid of the cheese £57,00 at 6^d per lb per case of 1501bs. The quantities shipped from the va/ ous ports were as tollow: —
A proposal was made by Mr. Purchas at the Trades Council last evening that the Government should, in the interests ,of the people, take over all mines that weie closed down and work them. He moved thus, he said, in order to defeat a plan of employers to raise a, fighting fund in order to defeat aspirations of the coal miners, and to prevent them consolidating their position and. becoming too strong. The motion wts cirried unaniinouily.
