THE DUNEDIN NORTH SEAT.
STATEMENT BY MR. BARCLAY. HE SUGGESTS ANOTHER ELECTION. [BT TZLEGBAPH. — SPECIAL TO THE POST.] DUNEDIN, This Day. In his statement to his election committee Mr. Barclay said :—"I: — "I hardly envy Mr. Thomson the possession of the seat in such circumstances. It cannot be said that it is not held under a cloud and shadow, nominally, by Mr. Thomson ; but really that is another question. Had the Magistrate declared I was entitled to the seat as a result of the recount, and i€ was shown that sufficient of Mr. Thomson's votes were missing to make the issue doubtful, I should not have held the seat for an hour. I would havo felt it my duty to resign at once rather than hold a seat that had any trace of taint about it. 'The solution of the vexed question would be for both candidates to step once more into the arena and let the question be settled .definitely by tho electors of Dunedin North, whicli of the two candidates they desire as their representative." Mr. Thomson will not adopt the suggestion thrown out. Tho feeling is growing that Mr. Barclay will not proceed wi h the matter -further.
