CANTERBURY'S ANNIVERSARY.

Writing yesterday of the coming celebiations the Press said : — "First in point of appropriateness will be the gathering under the auspices of the Old Colonists' Association. This yeaT — the first of the existence of the Association — it has been determines to erect a j. stone on tho site- in Hagley Park whero several of the families who arrived ,by I the Charlotte Jane, one of the first four ships, erected their modest huts and commenced their colonial life. The ceiemony of placing the stone in position will be very appropriately carried out by tho Hon. C. C. Bowen, a member oi' one of the families who camped lon the spot. Some' little time- ago the ! Association held meetings and visited various spots around the city, and iron stakes were placed to mark the historic sites. These will bo replaced as time goes on by stone pillars similar to the one to be inaugurated to-morrow. A j brass plate records the reason for the erection of tho stone. In the evening a social gathering will be held in the Provincial Council Chambers."

A brick chimney was the origin of an action for damages heard by Dr. M'Arthur to-day. William Hamilton claimed £9 13s 6d from William Wearne, contractor, for damages resulting from the alleged faulty construction of the chimney in a house at Miramar. The 'defence was that there was no defective workmanship or material, and that any variations made were necessary owing to j tho design of the building. His Worship reserved judgment for Saturday next. Mr. J. J. M'Grath appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. Dunn for the defendant. Members of tho committee of the Sunday School Union are requested to join tho deputation which is to wait on the City Council to-morrow evening ra Sunday concerts. The committee will meet after the deputation has interviewed the council.
