«. WITHDRAWN AT £12,700. Much interest centred this afternoon in an offering of central city land (known as the Evans Estate) by Messrs. W. H. Tumbull and Company. The property, on which are buildings occupied by Messrs. Ludwig and Gallate Bros. and their sub-tenants, has a frontage of 39ffc 4in to Lambtpn-quay, and 43ft 6in to Wellington-terrace, with a depth of 170 ft lin to 180 ft Bin. The leases expire at the end of August. About thirty peopl9 were present when the auction proceedings began. It was explained that there was a right-of-way, 3ft wide, on tho north side, and this strip could not be built over. The rentals at present wero : — Gallate Bros., £240 a year (the landlord paying the local rates) , Ludwig, £200 (the tenant paying the rates). The, bidding started at £10,000, and rose by increments of £250 to £12,000 in a couple of minutes. Then the auctioneer agreed^ to take bids of £100, and the price slowly advanced to £12,700 (Mr. R. Hannah). The auctioneer said that he wanted a minimum of £13,000, and then passed on to another lot. An offer of £12,700 works out at about £323 per foot frontago to Lambtonquay, and the reserve price, £13,000, means about £330 per foot.

Mi\ F. R. Flatman's election expenses in Ashburton, are returned as £115 6s 6d for the first ballot, and £42 19s 6d for the second. The Hon. Captain Tucker, of Gisborne, has engaged five young men from Tory Channel to shear his sheep on Campbell Island, and they wil' leave tho Bluff by the Hinemoa next week for the sosne of their labours. The leader of the party is Jackson, a grandson of the man after whom the headland at the main entrance to Queen Charlotte Sound was named. After they have finished shearing, the men will hunt whales in the vicinity of Campbell Island. They are taking a powerful oil launch with them. The pigeon match for the W. H. Club's Ladies' Bracelet was fired off yesterday, and resulted in an easy win for Fawcett (scratch), who obtained the possible from 27 yards.
