FOUR CONVICTIONS.
' Four men — Joseph Parggie, Duo ' lante, William Nolan, v and Joseph ' TMacarthy — appeared before Dr. MAr- ( thur, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court, ; fhis morning, charged with being con- 1 cerned in the illegal sale of liquor. SubInspector Phair represented the police. Accused pleaded guilty. According to ( the evidence submitted, two probation-,, ary constables called at No. 4, Foresters- lane, and on asking if they could^ be supplied with liquor defendant Mil- "* lanfce procured it from the room in the house ne occupied. A second visit was /made, and again beer was supplied to ' the probationers. Sergeants Rutledge, and Stewart then made a raid ancL v- ,' seized eleven bottles of beer discovered" . in a basket under Millante's bed. Paiggie was found on the premises. Tho i defendants Nolan and Macarthy were,; charged with selling liquor in the ' streets. It was stated that accused' were in the habit of purveying beer in Courtenay-place and about Tory- • street. Two probationary constable* , were supplied with beer by these do.fendants in a by-street. The SubInspector asked for a substantial pen- , alty in each case, as there had been, complaints about this practice, and ' owing to the spies employed by these.' people detection was extremely difficult.. Sly grog business was very continuous, and much too general. Dr. M'Arthur, in passing sentence, pointed out tho seriousness of the offence and its maximum penalties. For being on the premises Paiggie was convicted and fined £2, with the option of fourteen days' imprisonment. Nolan and Macarthy, were mulcted in penalties of £25 each, with options of a. month in gaol. On the two charges of unlawfully selling •beer to the probationers, defendant Millante ;\vas convicted. On the first charge he was fined £25, and on the second £10. The alternative was fixed at ono month's imprisonment.
