CHESS.
An exceedingly enjoyable match was | ' played last evening 1 at the rooms of the Wellington Chess Club, Manners-street, : between the club's representatives and a combined team from the three suburban I clubs, viz., South Wellington, Hutt, and Petone. The Wellington Club was represented by an exceptionally strong team, and the suburbanites did very well to 6core one-third of the games. The promoters of the match had unfavourable weather to contend with, and the excellent attendance was therefore all the more gratifying. Toasts were exchanged at the conclusion of the contest, and three cheors were also accorded to the club's president, Mr. E. W. Petherick, who kindly provided refreshments during the evening. The Phoenix Lodge of Good Templars held its weekly session at Lower Hutt, Bro. Winnie, C.T., presiding. After tho usual business, the lodge had a pleasant surprise visit from members of the Star of Wellington, Star of Newtown, and King's Coronation Good Templar Lodges. The following contributed items to the programme : — Overture, Bro. Boyd ; songs, Bros. Ralph, Cresswell, Lambert, Winnie, and Short, Sistors Trott and Price ; recitations by Bro. "Paris and Sister Seagar.
