« : TEAM TO PLAY HOROWHENUA. • Messrs. M. Hogan, J. Pudney, and E. Wylie, selectors to tho Wellington Rugby Union, have chosen the following team to represent Wellington B against Horowhenua A, in the match to be played on the Athletic Park next Saturday. The team is"*noteworthy for ! the number of new players who have | been given a chance, and as there is yet another B team to be picked — in readiness for the tour to Blenheim and Nelson at the end of this month — all the players may be relied upon to strive their utmost. They are to meet at tho Athletic Club's gymnasium to-morrow night, at 7.30 o'clock. The team is as follows : — Full-back, Varcoej three-quarters, Beavis, Flanagan, Hitchings ; liveeighths, Sellars and Church ; half, Tilyard; forwards, Gardner, J. Murphy, Houlihan, Cameron, Perry, Avery, Calcincli, and Osborne. Emergencies : Forwards, Knight and Bell ; back, Poole.

It is one thing to give the mariner a guiding light at sea ; it is another to give the light an unmistakable individuality. Yesterday afternoon, for the enlightenment of the Herbour Board, representatives of the Acetylene Illuminating Company, of London, gave an exhibition of the suitability of "dissolved acetylene" gas for buoys. It was clearly .shown that the "flasher" — a bright light — could be regulated in any way desired. The light can be twinkled for only a tenth of a second or may be made to gleam for thirty seconds. The periods of light and darkness can be arranged on any plan so that a navigator cannot possibly confuse any particular buoy ■with any other mark. A buoy, a light- j house, or any other object can be given , an absolutely distinctive character, and , it is possible to put in a three years 1 supply of illuminant. At present the buoys in Wellington Harbour have fixed i lights, and the supplies have to be renewed once a month. In the new system, which is in use on parts of the coasts of Great Britain, in {Swedish and American waters, strong cylinders are filled with porous material soaked in acetoneand purified acetylene is pumped into •them under pressure. It is claimed that the resultant gas is clear, safe, and free from all the faults of ordinary acetylene. ! The new illuminant can, of course, be I Hsed for lighting railway trains, motor ! cars and so on. The suggestion that the local buoys should be equipped with the ! "D.A." apparatus, is to be considered at j the next meeting of the Harbour Board, j Mr. Stansfield, mine manager for ! -Talisman Consolidated, has telegraphed' to Mr. T. S. Weston that the water in the thirteenth level of the mine has become too strong for the pumps owing to the New Zealand Crown Mines having ceased to pump frcm their lower levels. The manager, however, antici- ! pates being able to prevent the water I getting into the twelfth level. The new I pump in course of installation, it is pointed out, is a great deal more powerful than the old one, but is not yet available for working to its full extent. At the concert chamber of the Town 'Hall this evening, Mr. A. L. Herdman, a candidate for Wellington North seat at the general election, will deliver his first address. To-morrow and following days Messrs. Levicn, ShaJlcrass and Co. will hold a bxlo of tweeds. Melton seraeß, _ dress lengths, etc., in their rooms, Willis-atroet.
