Messrs. A. H. Russell, J. B. Clarkson, and John Braid returned to Wellington by the Warrimoo to-day. Mr. John Duthie, junior, who has been to the South Sea Islands on a health trip, and who . afterwards went to New South Wales, returned to Wellington by the steamer Warrimoo, which reached port this morning. The following team will represent Wellington in the polo match on skatesagainst Canterbury at Christchurch next Saturday night — E. D. Bennett, F. Crewes, M. Keegan, A. H. Ragg, A. Paterson and J. Reese (goalkeeper). The prospect of opening up trade between Wellington and Tauranga is to be the subject of an address to be given to the members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce on Friday next at 4 o'clock by Mr. Courtney, representative of the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce. On Wednesday and Thursday, August 26th and 27th, a gymnasium carnival, under the title "circus," will be held at the V.M.C.A., Upper Willis-street. The programme is of an attractive and original character, including such items a,s parade of curiosities and freaks, elephant jumping, fiignor Chapmanio (invincible weight-lifter), funny clowns, and a host of other novelties, which should draw large attendances. " Circus" is under the management of the leader's corps. Mr. Albert Mallinson, the English song writer, and Madame Anna Steinhauer, the Danish soprano, now touring New Zealand under the concert direction of Messrs. Clyde Meynell and John Gunn, will give two recitals in the Town Hall on Wednesday and Friday, September 2nd and 4 th. The concert party also includes Miss Rebe Kussmann, a young violinist; Mr. William Robyns, an Australian basso ; and Miss Evelyn Wyman as pianist. The Mallmson recitals are -under the patronge of Her Majesty Queen Alexandra — a k distinction, it is said, given for the first ftime to any artists touring Australasia.
