[By TslEgbaph. — Special to The Post.] AUCKLAND 4 , 23rd May. The tramway strike seriously affected tho attendance at the Auckland Rugby Union matches played here to-day. The best exhibition jn the senior grade was given in the 'Vars-ity-Parnell match-, the scholars winning after a fine open game by six points to three. The play of the 'Varsity backs was excellent, a great amount of combination being shown. Both teams have light forwards, and their work was very open. Tries were scored for 'Varsity by Robinson and Wilson, and for Parnell by Hogan Pon&onby had a runaway victory from Newton, winning by 30 points to 9. Ponsonby's magnificent forward line again asserted itself, completely overrunning Newton. There are five forwards in this pack good enough for any New Zealand team. Tries were scored for Ponsonby by Carlaw (4), Bater, A. Nicholson, Hall, and Blaikie (one each). Webb converted two tries and Gillett one. For Newton, Duval scored a try and Freeman kicked two penalty goals. ■ The Ponsonby front rank contains this season Gillett, Nicholson, Cunningham, and Francis, of "All Black" fame.
