ANNUAL REGATTA.

The weather conditions for the regatta on Saturday were anything but ideal. A stiff northerly came up with the morning, and it was accordingly decided to hold tho regatta off tho Petone-Nga-hauranga course. The sea was very lumpy early in the day. but calmed somewhat before tho last of the events wero decided. A considerable number of peoplo watched the finishes from tho shore near Petone, while several enthusiasts followed the various races in ti>e umpire's boat, the Pilot. It was originally intended that the Duco should .'.? duty as umpire's boat, and the fact tliat a change was made did not tend to : 1% .e comfort of those on board. TJbo Pilot had been recently painted — very recently — and the paint snowed a distinct tendency to adhere to one's clothes. Tho Blenheim and Canterbury crews rowed with good success during the day, and the Wanganu Rowing Club's representatives had no difficulty in annexing the senior sculls and senior double sculls. The races were got off rigidly to time. In one case three crews were making their way to the starting biioy long | aftet- time saw their more punctual opponents sent off; without tliom. This salutary lsssop had an excellent effect. Following are the results :—: — i MAIDEN FOURS.— One mile. Star B.C. (Brewer, Kerslake, Seward, Bridge) 1 Petone R.C 2 Canterbury R.C o Also started : Star (No. 2), Wellington, and Blenheim. The Wellington men won rather easily by three lengths ; a great finish for second place. No time taken. SENIOR FOURS.— Two miles. Blenheim R.C. (Jackson str, Hegglun, Jordan, Heffer, Lucas cox) ... 1 Canterbury R.C 2 Picton R.O 3 Also started : Star B.C. Picton went off smartly, and led over the first half mile. Canterbury then assumed the lead, but were soon displaced by Blenheim, who forged ahead, picked up the smooth water, and won by three lengths, about the same distance between second and third. Time, 14min 4sec. JUNIOR CLINKER FOURS.— I£ miles Union R.C. Christchurch plahoney | sir, Blaclanore, O'Brien, Mans- , "field) ... • 1 Picton R.C 2 Star B.C. 3 Also started : Blenheim R.C. and Petone R.C. Blenheim had the best water to row in, while Union were situated on the extreme outside. The race between the first and second crews was a great one, Union winning by a foot or two, Stars ssveral lengths away. Time, 9min 82sec. SENIOR DOUBLE SCULLS.— I£ miles Wanganui R.C. (M'Donald str, Marshall) 1 Wellington R.C. (Gaudin, M'Kinley) 2 : Star B.C. (Bridge, Oswin) 3 Also started : Union R.C. (Christchurch). This was a "good thing" for Wanganui. When they came to the business end of the journey they had matters pretty much their, own way. Time, lOmin 21sec. MAIDEN DOUBLE SCULLS.— One Mile. Blenheim R.C. (Jordon, Heffer) ... 1 Picten R.C. (Gullery, .Gestro) . ... 2. These were the only starters, the other crews (Wellington, Petone, and Star), failing to get to the post in time. Blenheim won by three lengths. Time, 7min 37sec. YOUTHS' FOURS.— One mile. Canterbury R.C. (Dougall str, Fitzer, Tims, Craddock) 1 Star .B.C. (Turnbull, Marehant, Brewer, Lawscn) 2 Wellington R.C. (M'Vay, Cairns, Shilling, Davey) 3 The Canterbury crew rowed well from tho start. Tho Star crew made a game effort nearing the winning buoy, but failed to catch the winner by a length and a half. Time, 6min 37£ sec. JUNIOR PAIRS.— One mile. Bjenheim R.C. (Jordon, Heffer) ... 1 Picton R.C. (Perano, Carrick) ... 2 Potone R.C. (Bonner, Gallaher) ... 3 Also started : Star B.C. The Blenheim crew, which previously won the Maiden Double Sculls, were a much better pair than anything else in the race, and Jed over the whole distance. There was a great fight between second and third. Petone held the advantage a short distance from home, but Picton came on and gained second money by half a length. SENIOR PAIRS.— One mile and a half. Canterbury R.C. (E. Guthrie, J. Guthrie) \ Blenheim R.C. (Jackson, Hegglun). 2 Union R.C. (Fry, Duggan) ' 3 Also started : Star and Picton. Canterbury and Blenheim (who rowed on the extreme outside) led over the first half mile, Stars being next. The Canterbury pair succeeded in getting the best water half a mile from home, and succeeded in staving off a determined struggle by four lengths; poor third. Picton did not finish. SENIOR SCULLS— One mile and a halt E. M'Donald (Wanganui) ... 1 G. H. Fell (Star) ... ... '" - 2 H. M'Kinley (Wellington) 3 The Wanganui man and Fell made the pace over the first mile. M'Donald then gradually drew away and amply justified the good opinions which had preceded him. Won by four lengths. Time, llmin llsec. JUNIOR FOURS— MiIe and a half. Union R.C, Chriatchurch (Mahoney, Blackmore, O'Brien, Mansfield) 1 Picton R.C ' 2 Blenheim R.C \'\ 3 Also started : Star B.C. The fight was all between Union and Picton. The former won by half a length after a splendid struggle. Time, 9min 27sec.
