TRAMWAY EXTENSIONS.
ARO-STREET PROPOSAL NOT WARRANTED.
POLL TO BE TAKEN RE WADESTOWN. "The committee has to report that it has received a petition from the residents of Ivelburno, Taitville, and Highbury for tho extension of tho Aro-street tramway to the end of Norway-street, Taitville, and after considering the Electrical Engineer's report on the matter, has como to tho conclusion that the expenditure, over £10,000, is not warranted at the present time. The committee has. also <. - eceived a report from tho City and Electrical Engineers with respect to the proposed tramway to Wadestown. It would draw the attention of the coun cil to the clause in the Onslow Borough Amalgamation report of tho 14th March, 1907, dealing with the alternative tramway_ routes as follows : — 'The City Engineor to report upon the best tramway route to Wadestown, also tho cost of a motor 'bus servico, alternative motor 'bus and tramway schemes to be submitted to the ratepayers, the report to oe simultaneous with road improve ments report. Tho whole of the South Ward to bo subject to a special rate to cover the loss (if any) of any tram or 'bus service that may be installed.' The committee has to recommend that the alternative tramway routes as reported on by the. engineers be submitted to the Wadestown ratepayers. If route No. 2 is adopted,, the rato necessary to be struck on the unimproved value of the area, to make up for shortage shown in the engineers' report, will be 4 3-16 din the £." After a short discussion, in course of which it was said that the proposal to run a cable tram to Wadestgwn was impracticable-, the report was adopted. It was intimated by the Mayor, in answer to a question, that there had boen negotiations with the owners of one large estate, regarding a grant in aid of the proposed tramway as set out in the resolution.
