PONY AND GALLOWAY RAGES.

TO IHE EDITOR. Sir, — The above races are advertised to be run on Saturday next, the 22nd. I should like, through the medium of your columns, to draw the attention of anyone taking part, either as an official or as owner, trainer, or jockey, to the fact that they will, by reason of taking, such part, bo immediately disqualified from raring or taking any part in racing under the New Zealand Rules of Racing. A largo proportion of those taking part are no doubt prepared to incur this penalty, but there are grave reasons for believing that many who purpose taking part arc unaware of the risk they aie running, and of the very unpleasant position in -which they will find themselves placed. Although it has been advertised that the New Zealand Rules of Racing are to be. adhered to as inurh as possible, it cannot be too widely known that this proprietary dub has made absolutely no application for a permit to race, either of the, Racing Conference or of the Wellington Racing Club, in whose district the races are to be held. In addition to disqualification, those taking part are liable to removal from any course held under the New Zealand Conference rules. Theso pony and galloway races represent an attempt to ignore the present racing authorities, as recognised throughout tha Dominion, and to inaugurate an experiment of a hi.ehly dangerous nature. As a consequence, there is no question as to the drastic nature of the disqualification that must follow and reinstatement ■will bo extremely difficult. The disqualification also extends throughout the Commonwealth. It is to be hoped, therefore, that anyone proposing to take part will carefully weign their position before it is too late, and they are personally committed, if they chose to take part then they do so with their eyes open. — I am, etc., STEWARD. Wellington, 20th Feb., 1903. [Publication of this letter was delayed with the object of giving the promoters of the pony and galloway races an opportunity of replying to the points made. This opportunity, however, they have failed to take advantage of.J
