Senator Best announced in the Senate that the Imperial Government had agreed to allow the Comomvealth to coin its own silver. At tho beginning of last, month a branch of the Royal Minfc was officially opened at Ottawa. It will bo remembered that -when Mr. Deakin, tho Federal Prime Minster, went to the Imparial Conference he took with him the following motion: — "That the profit of silver corned for the colonies be credited to tho colonies in respect to which it is gained." Sir Joseph Ward supported tho proposal of Australia for a mint in that country, and asked the Chancellor i of tho Exchequer io allow New Zealand to follow the same couise if she j thought it desirable. He did not think ! New Zealand was likely to undertake the establishment of a mint iv the immediate future, but ho wanted New I Zealand to be under the same conditions as Australia. Mr. Asquith agreed to the motion, and said ho was willing to | concede Australia and New Zealand indepondent action.
