COMMERCIAL LONDON MARKETS.

HIGII COMjMISSIONER'S REPORT. Tho Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following- cablo from the High Commissioner, datDd London, 22nd February, 1908: — Tho mutton market is quiet. Canterbury brands are scarce, and are quoted at 4id per lb nominal. North Inland is quoted at 3^d per lb. Außtralian muttop, of which there ia a large supply, is quoted at 2|d per lb. River Plate mutton is also in large supply, and is being . strongly pushed for sale at 3d per lb. The lamb market, is quiet ; there is a fair demand for New Zealand brands, and supplies are increasing. Canterbury lamb is quoted at s|d, and other than Canterbury at sj(d per lb. The beef market is Eteady. Hind quaiters are quoted at 3ad. and forequartera at 2|d per lb. Tho butter market is very unsettled, and transactions are very limited on account of high prices. Buyers of butter are holding back, expecting prices to go lower, and substitutes are being pushed for sale. Some holders aro forcing sales. The following are the current quotations : — New Zealand, 146s ; Australian, 144s ; Danish, 148s per ewt. The cheese market is firm, stock being held in few hands. White makes aro quoted at 625, coloured at 63s per cwt. There is better demand for cheese. The hemp market is dull, and trancactions aro light. Heavy shipments are expected'from Manila for soiae time. Current quotations are as follows: — Good fair grade on spot, £27 ; fair grade on spot, £26 ; , fair current Manila on spot £27. j March-May shipments : good fair grade, £25 10s; fair giade, £25 10s; fair current Manila, £26 lCs. The cocksfoot market is a shade weaker, and buyers are not keen to do business "Bright, clean dressed seed weighing 171b to the bushel, is , o.uoted at 74b per cwt. The wool market is quiet. Bradford tops aro quoted at id lower than last week. Tho following are tho current quotations for kauri gum : Ordinary to fair threequarter scraped, 1655; fair half-Ecraped, 102s 6a ; brown, fair half to three-quar-ter scraped, 955 ; Brown, pickings common to good, 555 ; bush, fair to good pale and amber scraped, 150. The market is quiet. 'JLhe hop market is very depressed, although thero is a moderate supply, and prospect-, are unfavourable. Ameiican hop 1 * .ire l-eiup- pofliod for s.ilo at 40s. English hops arc quoted at 60s for best quality, 40-> for good middling quality, per cwt.

At 2 o'clock to-morrow Messrs W. H. Jlorrah ana Co. will sell by public auction in their rooms, Willis-street, household furniture and effects, the contents of an 3-roomod house. Messrs Fielder and Co., Manners-street, advertise a diaplay of carpets and Oriental rugs at their Ehowrooms. An inspection is invited. Messrs Macdonald, Wilson and Co. will submit to auction to-morrow, at 2.30 o'clock, at their exchange land mart, nineteen freehold building sections, and two houses containing respectively four and six rooms, situate within ten minutes walk from the Aro-street tram, and having varying frontages to Pilcher-road and the upper Kaiwarra-road, and areas from seven perches to nearly half an acre.
