CRICKET. CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL.

OLD BOYS v. MIDLAND. The final of the senior championship was commenced on Saturday afternoon on tho Barm Eesorve between Midland and Old Boys. There was a good attendance. The wicket was in fair order, considering the dry weather, and Old Boys elcrted to bat. The result was most astonishing. The first wicket fell for 54, the second for 223. and at the close of the day's play the score was 345 for five wickets. Beochey was th? hero of the occasion. Batting with tho utmost confidence and freedom he rapidly enhanced his score until after about two hours' play he brought up bis total to tho century. He put on moro than anothor half century before departing to a good catrh by Queo at deep mid-on, He was enthusiastically applauded for a faultless innings of 158 — the highest individual score this season in Wellington spnior oricket. S. Hickson's 119 i'or Wellington agaiust Petone was the previous best. Tucker Was Beechey's partner for a long while. Ho Was lucky. At the very start of his innings he gave a difficult chance in the slips, and later, when his score stood at 27, Mitchell missed him from a high glance through ' the gHpIS. Mitchell, however, had the satisfaction of breaking up the partnership by bowling Tucker, who had then made 60. Loraax did nob stay long, but J. P. Blacklock .began to hit in his own inimitable style. When 32 ho skied one off Hiokson, and was caught. Monaghan and Wills, aftsr Beechey had retired,, played out time. Phosnix met Petone on No. 2 wicket and but for the great innings of Laws, who carried out his bat for 121, would have made a poor show indeed. Laws was in great hitting fettle. He drove Smyrk twice out of tho ground, once just behind tho band rotunda, and the second, a still moro vigorous stroke-, bouncing over the pavilion roof. Taylor was batting steadily, and had mado 24, when stumps were drawn. Tha Gas Company- Wellington match on No. 3 was eclipsed by (he move interesting games' closer at hand. Hodgn compiled an excellent score of 48, and Topp was slow and sure with his 36. Asbbolt was somo little time in aggregating 23. The most successful of . the Wellington bowlers was Luckio, with five wickets for 41. Following are details :— . PHOENIX v. PETONE. Phoenix. First Innirigs.
