MASTERTON'S HOLIDAY. PEOPLE'S DAY AT THE SHOW.
(By Telegraph.) (From Our Special Reporter.) MASTERTON, This Day. People's day at tho show is giving I promise of fine weather, though the I clouds obscured the sun until mid-day. There is a fairly large muster of farmers from all parts of the valtey, and a much bigger attendance is likely in the afternoon, when the Governor will arrive. This morning an auction sale of some of the fat stock shown in the competitive classes took place, when some big prices were realised. The agricultural products were of fairly good quality, but it was noticeable that in many classes only one entry was received. Wheat, peas, ryecorn, and potatoes were amongst this lot, and in no class was there more than three entries. The judge (Mr. F. S. Hodson, of Wellington), was pleased with * several of the exhibits, but he saw room for improvement in others. For oats F. W. Blatchford got three first prizes, and Dagg Bros, also got first prizes for wheat, Yorkshire Hero peas, ryecorn, ryegrass and cocksfoot. J. Picket got first prize for potatoes, the Wairarapa Farmers' Association two first prizes for oats, and J. D. Oruickshank and Co. two. The last named firm also took first prize for barley, spring wheat, ryegrass, cocksfoot, and faim seeds. Groves Bros, gained two ihsts and two seconds for honey. .
Mr. 11. T. Robertson, of Grey-street, has been appointed sole agent for tiie South Australian firm which is sending a. consignment of grapes from thai State to New Zealand. Tho first consignment is expected to arrive at Wellington by the Wimmoro on Friday, and will consist of twenty-five cases. Arrangements are, however, being made j for ihlpments of from 50 to 100 cases j weekly till the end of tho season. At the Empire Hotel last night a dinner was given by tho office™ of the St. Patiick'B Collego Old Boys' Association in honour of Mr. Robert Hayward, of Chriitchurch, one of the vice-presidents of the association. Those present included the President (Very* Rev Father Keogh) and the vice-Presi-dents and members of tho executive committee- of the association. The following toasts were amongst those honoured : — "The King," "Our Guest," "Our President," "Our Cricket and Hockey Clubs." Mention was made of the good services in the interests of the association m Christchurch rendered by Mr Hayward, and also to (he success achieved by college' students in i'ece_nt public examinations.
