THE WAIMARAMA BLOCK. CLOSE SETTLEMENT URGED.
[BT TELEGBAPII. — PBESS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, This Day. Yesterday a large party, including the Mayor and Councillors of the Hastings Borough Council, Mr. Dillon, M.P., Hon. \V. Carncross, M.L.C., and others paid a visit to Waimarama to make themselves acquainted with the property concerning which the- Native Commission is malting certain recommendations. After viewing tho locality the following resolution was passed : — "That the Mayor be requested to call a public meeting at an early date with a view to urging the Government to secure the spashore frontage as a public watering place for the benefit of the people, and a further area for close settlement ; and that an invitation be sent to the Prime Minister and the Minister for Lands to visit Waimarama at an early date to inspect." It was also stated that the natives had expressed their willingness to dispose of a further 6000 acres by public auction to encourage closer settlement, ■which scheme was impracticable if the frontage was not reserved.
