SWIFTS CLUB SWIMMING CARNIVAL. A NEW ZEALAND RECORD BROKEN. Bpautiful weather prevailed for tho ninth annual carnival of the Swifts' Amateur Swimming Club, held at Te Aro Baths on Satuiday afternoon. The bun was warm, tho tide high, qnd the water smooth. Another special and pleasing feature was the large number of spectators present. The events weie got off fairly well to time, and some exciting finishes were witnessed. By far the most important featuro of the mooting was tho breaking of tho 220 yds Kew Zealand record by fi. C. Freyberg. This swimmer, -who is the local champion, succeeded in breaking the record for the 220 yds race two yeavs ago, and on this occasion it was known that he intended making a determined effoifc to lower his previous I time of 2min 43see. He succeeded in bringing the timo down to 2min 41sec. Starting when tho limit men wero about SOyda ahead, Freyberg ploughed through tho watfi at a great rate, and it w.is not long before he was on the heels of tho rear men. Then he overhauled swimmer after swimmer until ho finished up a number of yards ahead. The final of tho 220 yds is to be swum on Thursday evening. Two promising young swhiiuiers, G. R. ratevson and (.'• M. Ward/carried off the firtfc heat of the 220 yds in fins *tyle. Swimming neck to neck for the greater part of the distance, ih«y gradually overtook all the limit men, and at tho end had a stiuggkrwith each othrr for first place.
