CONGREGATIONAL UNION. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
The election of officers for the ensiling year was the chief business of this — tho last day's session of the Congregational Union. Following are the resalts : — Chairman, Rev. W. S. Fernie ; secretary, llev. W. Day ; treasurer, Mr. W. 11. Lyon : registrar. Mr. Granville limit j auditor, Mr. C. Campbell; proacher, Rev. A. E. Hunt; editor of the Congregational Outlook, Mr. Heighway; soncial committee, Rev. S. Griffiths, Messrs. A. G. Lee, W. Mitchell, H. Edmonds, C. E. Campbell, J. E. Hall, A. T. Craig, S. W. Smeeton, J. r. Hooton, J. E. Moore, W. 13. Leyland, and W. M. Trigg (Auckland), Revs. W. A. Evans, J. MD. Aspland, J. R. Glasson, Loanas, and Messrs. A. Lewis, and F. Mpadowcroft (Wellington), Revs. D. Hird. A. E. H;mt, I. W. Ball, and A. Henderson (Canterbury), Revs. Grant, Saundera, HeighSarginson, and Messrs. A. W. Beaven. way, and Fernie, and Messrs. R. Grieg and J. 11. Wilkins (Otago). The Rev. A. E. Hunt was re-appointed secretary of the church branch of the London Missionary Society. THEOLOGICAL STUDIES. Tho question of \ theological studies was raised by the Rev. R. M'Naughton, who asked what had been clone during the joar by the committee. As no report was foithcoming, it was decided, on the motion of the Rev. J. R. Glasson, that the committee .should be reappointed to investigate the matter of theological training for students. YOUNG PEOPLE'S SUNDAY. It was decided, on the motion of Rev. Mr. Ileighway, on behalf of the Otago District Committee, that it should be suggested to all the churches to set apart the third Sunday in October of each year as a "Young People's Sunday," universal decision might bo taken. \ committee was appointed to bring the matter under the notice of the various Sunday schools. THE NEED OF THE CHURCH. The Rev. J. R. Glasson moved that further discussion on the Rev. Mr. M'Naughton's paper on the need of the church, read on Monday, should not be taken during the present session, as there was no suitable time, but that the question should be brought up again at the next meeting of the council. The moion was carried against some dissentients. ORGANISING SECRETARY. A proposal to appoint an organising secretary to superintend the work of church extension met with opposition, and a motion that the committee of the union should be relieved of i,ts duty with regard to the appointment, was lost on the casting vote of the chairman. The matter will be brought up again at the next meeting of the council. Left sitting. Mr. James Kowin, who ha 3 been for some years a large operator in New Zealand butter, is on board the Arawa, dv& in Wellington about the 26th inst.
