BRITAIN'S NAVY.
THE ESTIMATES TOO HIGH. CHANCELLOR S OBJECTION. MEMBERS PLEDGED TO RETRENCHMENT. By Telegraph.— Preaa Association.— Copyright. (Received February 7, 10 a.m.) LONDON, 6th February. The Right Hon. H. H. Asquith (Chancellor of the Exchequer) objected to the Naval Estimates of Lord Tweedmouth (First Lord of tho Admiralty) as too high, and the estimates were returned to the Admiralty for revision. Cabinet has appointed a committee to consider lurther retrenchments, especially m the Navy, One hundred and thirty Liberals are pledged to a reduction of armaments, and are now pressing the "Government to reduce the estimates. Through the estimates not yet being tabled a debate thereon yesterday had to be- postponed, which was obviously inconvenient for tho Government. WHAT GERMANY WOULD LIKE TO SEE. LONDON, 6th February. Viscount Esher (a member of the Committee ot Imperial Defence) declines to join the new Imperial Maritime League, because he considers its demand for public enquiry in matters pertaining to the navy amounts to a vote of want-of-confidence in tho Admiralty. This, he declares, would cause Admiral Sir John Fisher's (First Sea Lord of the Admiralty) resignation, \vhitn everyone in Germany, from the Kaiser downwards, desires.
