EASILY DEFEATED. CRIME SHOWS A DECREASE. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. (Received) February 6, 9 a.m.) LONDON, sth February. In the House of Commons, the amendment to the Address-in-Reply, moved by the Right Hon. W. 11. Sir Edward Carson (lato SolicitorGeneral) said if the Government considered that serious offences in Irsland were inevitable because there was not land enough for all, that was tantamount to preaching Socialism pure and simple. Mr. Cherry (Attorney-General for Irelnnd) insisted that the ainoimt of crime in. Ireland in 1907 was less by half than the average for the five preceding years. He added that by trusting to ordinary law tho Government hoped to enlist the .^•mpathies of the people on the side of law 1 * so securing tranquillity. Sir Edward Carson's remarks were palpably intended as a reply to the statement of tho Chief Secretary for Ireland, Mr. Birrell, who, criticising Mr. Long's amendment, remarked 1 that cattle-"driv-ii\g" did not terrify him, but the piice of land and stock, the possibility of bad seasons, and the fear of disappointing land-hungry people did.
