AN OLD MAN'S DEATH.

Peter Rictz, a cabinetmaker; was found dead tins morning, in squalid premises situated at Old Custom-house street. Drosascd had a workshop in thnt quarter, at a point some thirty yards from Willis-street — a wslled-orf portion of a long, shed-liko structure— and in this h« worked ab his trado, cookod and ate^ his meals, and slept. The whole of his part of th« shed was aboi't ten lect by twelve, and in one corner he had a boxed-off division about one yard wide by two and a half yards long, in which he slept. Immediately beside this structure was a small conl stove, used for cooking purposes ; and apparently he worked, lived, and slept in these squalid quarters. Reitz had struggled out of his small bed in lus attempt to reach the outer air— he suffered from lung trouble, which made his quarters particularly unsuitable for him. The police nnd Dr. Henry wore summoned to the spot by the deceased's man neighbour. 1 !, and after the doctor had made a cursory examination of tho body he ordered its removal to the morgue, where an inquest will hr> held. For one afflicted with lung troubles tho cribbed quarters in which deceased lived wero lamentably unsuitable; but for any human being to bu compelled by slt-ess of circumstances to work and live in such quarters, or oven permitted to do so — no matter of what «ge or condition ho might be— waa indeed lamentable.
