Mr. W. It. Mcnzie3* weights' for tho Newmarket Handicap, cix furlongs, run at Flcmington on 29th Februaiy, arc as follows : — C'ollarit 9.10, Antonio 9.6, Corroborcc and lolaiio 9.3, Istria.' v 9.2, Elevation 9 1, North Head and Stop-dufc 9.0, Melodrama, Pink 'Un and Muniert 8 13, Ebullition 8.13, True Scot 8.10, Traquair ami Booran 8.8, Tho Owl 8.6, Rod Streak and Decollete 8.5, Knox, Little Toy, Tangoroa and Scotland 8.4, Dneky Morn, Miss Bobby and Tho Castaway 8 3, Master Footo 8.2, Montaguo 8.0, Pompous and Grenadier 7.12, Maltine 7.11, Gaby 7.10, Curtain Lecture and Lady Rylo&tono 7.9, Rondo, St. Peter and Lord Carlyon 7.8, Seddon, and Thalaba 7.7, Daoriada, Lisnarto, Bengalei, and Swoathess 7.5, Yillah and Lord Cecil 7.4, Maranui, Scobic, 1511 is and Croat 7.3, Galeria, Tortivo and Capt. Shannon 7.2, Fillo 1< ogi, ( Medallist and Rivemkle 7.1, Boastful, Submarine and Gcobung 7.0, Gendarme and Verenieo 6.13, Currandooley, Carissima, Kiwi, Lady Ayr, Seychelles and 1 Bright Steel 6.12, Clemency, Pretty Polly, Munus, Splash, Lady Joan, Equiform and Send Off 6.11, Sokinsha, Simplicity, Last Mistake, Ero, and Snowy River 6.9, Medalgia, Iliad, Pretty Peg, Red and White, Lady Kelvin, Red Clover, Lord Grafton, Two Step, Akin Foo, Returned, Fiery Star, Grace Vale, Sociulist, Lady Orzil, Currie, Quietist, Grafton Belle, Sustain, Banjo, Eskor, Clipper, and Merrijdng 6.7. Of the foregoing Elevation, Haltine, Pompous, Ma-ranui, and Ebrd Grafton have been scratched. The V.R.C. handicapper had ten horses bred in tho Dominion to deal with. Jn an endeavour to forecast tho weights which would be awarded by Mr. Menzies to the' principal nominations from this side, tho writer indicated tho following:—Elevation 9.3, Munjeet 93, Pink 'Un 8 13 Dusky Morn 8.7. In the actual handicap Elevation got off with 21b leas, Munjeet with 4, Pink 'Un with 1, and Dusky Mom with 3. Munjeet, at firbt glance, appears to bo the best treated of the lot. On the Riccarton running it is extremely improbable that Elevation could concede Mr. Stead's cast-off an ounce of weight over six furlongs. At level weights most people would preter Munjeet to Pink 'Un. About, a year ago, beforo tho ea.U of Pink "Un, his then owner waß said to bo willing to take Munjcot on in a match over peven furlonga, but nothing came of it. D. Prioe has a couple of fliers in Munjoet and Pink 'Un, and if /tho horso j B really better than tho mare— a very doubtful point indeed — then there is a great chanco for a coup being hrought oif. Dusky Morn has got his full desert?. Many excellent 'judges consider tho big Sou- Wester an over-ratod animal. Ho would require to bo particularly fit to beat Munjeet at 91b. Grenadier (7.12), the handsome galloper by Soult — Hotchcrina, was considered to havo a chanc* second to none in last Newmarket, but he went wrong a few i days bofore tho race. Gronadier was taken across? to Australia from hero ' some three years ago by F. Leslie, the bookmaker who was oporating at Trentham recently. Soddon is the three-year-old full brother to Wairiki, but so far he haa fallen far short of. the standard Bet by nis distinguished relative. Still, Seddon is. a goodlooking colt, and may yet redeem his character. For a good colt 7.7 is a luxury. Maranui, ,7.3, still gets tho weight kept up on the strength of thoae "boomed" gallops at RanchViek in th* spring. Ellis., by Hotchkiss— Lady Cureton, is lightly treated at 7.3 for » horse that has won a couple of woight-for-age races and a good handicap . like tho Willianrrtbwn Cup. Captain Shaunon has 7.2, or 51b less than he won tho C.J.C. Stewards with in 1906. Tho remaining New Zealander \a Equiform, 6.11, wjio has been a rank failuro since Yaldhurst weeded him out. The ruling favourites, North Head and Scotland, who -were veil backed! before the issue of tho weights, havo been" well looked after. Tho tunncr, who has two seconds to his credit, in this raco has 9.0, and Scotland has bueu awarded 8.4, but through Istria has still been left with a chanco.
