ARBITRATION COURT. OTAGO CASES.
[bt telegijaph.— rsusa association.] DUNEDIN. 3rd February. i The Arbitration Court sat to-day, Mr. j M'Cullough, workers' repesentath c, sitting for ths first time. Mr. Pryor, deputy, represented tho employers. The Dunedin Pork and Poultry Company was fined £2 for employing C. Miner, a small goods butcher, at less than the award rate of wages. .Miner was fined in costs for accepting legs then the statutory wages. J. Webster was proceeded against ■. for employing a journeyman upholsterer on piece work. The court upheld the contention of the defence that i tho case was one of contracting, and dismissed the case. A cliarge against D. Robertson of employing two apprentices indentured to sign-writing in t]ie ordinary work of painting was dismissed, but tho court directed the inspector to prosecute for inadequate payment of wages. Henderson and Grey, lime burners (Milburn) wore charged with paying underlate wages. Decision was reserved. For a breach of the bakers' award by J. H. Chalmers a conviction was recorded. H. Miliigan, of Oamaru, wa3 charged with a breach of the tailors' award by employing to many apprentices.. The defence was that respondent could not get hands'. He <was fined £3 and costs. T. B. Gibb, of Oamam, charged with a breach of the bakers' aVard. JSo breach was proved and the case was dismissed. The court had'" no power to give costs againsy'the inspector. Irvine and r Stevenson, w.ere cited for an alleged breach of the butchers' award by not paying a first small-goods man the award wages. The court decided that the man was a second hand, and the casß' was dismissed.
