At the City Court to-day, five defendants — decent working men, or the magistrate would have inflicted a. heavier penalty — were euch fined £3 and costs for playing "two up.' 1 The Athenaeum subscribers strongly opposed the amalgamation with fche Free Library. The Mayor proposes to discontinue further negotiations, and to proceed with the equipment of the latter institution. Mr. Belcher, secretary of tho Wharf Labourers' Union, has received a telegram from tho Waterside Workers' Federation, Wellington, to which the Dunedin body is affiliated, congratulating the union on the decision to cancel the registration. Thirty young able-bodied men were oent by tho Labour Department this morning to^the Catlin railway works.
