Mr. J. F. Dyer has been appointed vice-consul for Greece for Now Zealand. Rev. T. G. Kay, who has been away on a holiday visit, returned to Wellington to-naj. Mr. A. M. A cable message has been received from Newcasde-on-Tyne, stating that Mr. Alex D. Pirie, son of Mr. W. Pirio, of Mortimsr-terrace, Wellington has been successful in passing his second marine engineers' examination. For the last fifteen months Mr. Pirie has been one of the engineers of the Cairn Avon, owned by Cairn, Noble and Co., of New-castle-on-Tyne He served his time partly in the Government workshops in Perth, and partly at Anderson's Christchurch,, and was for some time in the Manawatu Railway Company's workshop. Mr. John Ammundsen, Government timber expprt, who for years has been employed in the Waimarino forest, and has done a lot of Important and valuable work in connection with sawmilling and the selection of timber required for th© Public Wwks Department), lias been appointed to the position of Crown Lands Ranger, and will have the supervision o* the northern extremity of the Wellington land district. In this part Mr. Auimundsen has been chiefly employed seeing that the timber required for cutting was properly bandied and duly accounted for, and that no unnecessary waste was permitted.
