CHARITABLE AID.

WELLINGTON AXD WAIRARAPA BOARD. A meeting of the Wellington and Wairarapa. Charitable Aid' Board was held yesterday. Present — Messrs. R. C. Kirk (chairman), F. Cohen, 11. Murdoch, and D. M'Lareii. ■It w?ts> decided that Mr: Smith, who had boen re-elected to the board, be invited to resume his seat on the executive. It will bo remembered that Mr. Smith's election was found to be invalid, end a further election was held, when he wa* re-elected according to procedure. When the vouchers of aid granted by the various local bodies 'were gone through, it was found that several of them were 'out of order. It was also found that where complete lists were given several of^ the articles shown to be purchased by medium of charitable . aid wprc more akin to luxuries than necessities. Such articles as barbed wire, kapok, nxe handles, ginger nuts, etc., appeared in the lists. It was thuSvConcluded that some of the local bodies had not exercised proper control. Tho chairman was of opinion that it would be necessary, seemg 1 i-he nature ot the commadities often purchased, to have an inspector to go round and see that tho&? people receiving charitable aid were not exceeding their privileges. Of course, the board did not desire to cut down small luxuries from aged people, but fne items stated in tho vouchers were quite another mattei. The board agreed that the best method, of dealing with the subject was the chairman's suggestion of appointing an inspector. It was thought that a ladywould be able to carry out 'the work. The matter was kit in the hands of the chairman, who was authorised' to appoint an inspector as soon as a suitable person could be obtained. For the convenience o£ the country member, Mr. Smith, it was decided to alter the date of meeting for the executive from the last Thursday to the last Tuesday of the month.
