SMALL HOLDINGS.

Earl Carrington, President of the Board of Agriculture, speaking at the National Liberal Club, stated that in three weeks three thousand persons had applied for eighty-three square miles under the Small Holdings Act. The Act was passed last session. It authorises the appointment of commissioners to act in conjunction with county councils in acquiring areas of land for subdivision into small holdings, and to let the allotments to private persons or associations. Land may bo taken compulsorily. Schemes are to be preprepared by the Board of Agriculture, which are to be carried out by the county councils, or in case of their default by the commissioners. There aro a number of machinery provisions to ensure the smooth working of the Act. '
