o- . By Telegraph.- Press Assoointi/jn.— Copyright. (Received January 29, 8.27 a.m.) PARIS, 28th January. Cardinal Richard, Archbishop of Paris, is dead at the age of 89. The deceased prelate was born at Nantes on 9th March, 1819. After long service in the church in France was elevated to the Caidinalate on 24th May, 1889. His tendencies were liberal, nnd in the great struggle between church and State in recent . years his influence was ! exerted to bnr.g about an nrrarijement between the two parties. Perhaps it was due to him that the churches in his archdiocese were among the first to comply with the new law. The State, however Ti'gorously confiscated the church property, including the archiepiscopal palace, which was converted into offices for the Minister of Labour. Like many of his predecessors in his high office, Cardinal Richard was noted for hi 3 personal bravery and devotion, and more than once risked his life in his efforts as peacemaker, especially during the stormj time 3 of the Commune.
