POVERTY BAY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — Apropos of recent suggo: lions to re-r.amo various place: in tho Dominion, I would like lo Eug-gcst to the authorities one diftriob of ■scry considerable importance tho ramo of which could very beneficially be changed, without, to my mind, any good objection being raised to it. The district I refer to h that of Poverty Bay. This name was given it by Captain Cook became of a comparatively unhnpei tant jreidont in one of h.is voyage-. It has, however, caused a very ciironcoua impression of tho fertility and resources of that district, not only in tho minds of strangers, but of residents generally throughout the Dominion — an impression which I believe has very largely contributed to its present isolation and want of means of communication. Tho Poverty Bay district, in contradiction to its name, contains — to Fay nothing of its scenic beauties — very largo areas of rich agricultural and pastoral lands, unsurpassed by any other portion of tho Dominion The recent \isit to it of the Hon. the Minister for Lands has brought the district somewhat into the public eye, dnd this would Eeem an
opportune timo to suggest a change of name. I would particularly commend the suggestion to the consideration of the Hon. Jas. Carroll. — I am, etc., INTERESTED. Wellington, 25th January.
