NEW PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, 20th December. You will probably have heard by cable beforo this letter can arrive by mail than Mr. D. Kennedy Picken, of Glasgow, ha 3 been appointed to the Chair of Mathematics at Victoria College, Wellington, but a few particulars of his career will doubtless be read with interest. Although only 28 years of age, Mr. PicTsen's course has been in some respects a brilliant ono. He has taken his M.A. degree with first-class honours in mathematics and natural philosophy at Glasgow ; he is also a B.A. of Cambridge, taking his degree at that university with honours, and being ' Sixth Wrangler in 1902. In teaching, he has had 4£ winter sessions and 5 summer sessions at the Scottish universities, and has been — and is now — chief asistant to the Professor of Mathematics and Lecturer on Mathematics at the University of Glasgow. This position Mr. Picken has held since he was first appointed chief assistant in January, 1903. A& chief lecturer he has had full charge of the Mathematical Depart, ment at fche summer half-session, and the large classes he has taught have had an average in numbers of 130, his honours classss numbering from 20 to 50 students. ■ Most excellent testimonials have been given 'Mr. Picken by Professor Jack, Principal M-* Alister, Dr. Morgan, and others. Professor Picken is married, but has no family. As he only accepted the appointment the day before yesterday, nothing has yet been settled as to the date when ho and his wife will leave for New Zealand.
