DEATH IN A POLICE CELL
John Coakley, who was arrested yesterday on a charge of having insufficient lawful means of support* was found dead in the cell at Lambton-quay police station about 11.30 last night. Deceased was visited in his cell at the usual hours by Constable Scott, and at 8.45 was seen moving about the cell, but there was nothing special noted in his condition at that time. About five minutes past 10 o'clock the constable again visited the cell and found deceased standing up near the door. The constable suggested to Coakley that it was getting time to lie down as it was late. He had alTeady been supplied with blankets. At 11.35 p.m., Constable Scott, accompanied by Sergt. Kelly, who was in charge of the station for the night, again visited the cell and found the man lying full length of the floor, apparently dead. Dr. Young arrived at the station about 12.30 and on examining the body pronounced life to have been extinct for about one hour. Deceased, who was about 38 years of age, is supposed to be unmarried. An inquest is being held at the morgue this afternoon.
