SHIPWRECK RELIEF SOCIETY. A REPLY TO CRITICISM.

I [UT TELEGRAPH. — PEESS ASS6OIATION.] DUNEDIN, This Day. The Mayor (Mr. London) states in answer to Air. Russell's strictures in Christchurch on tho Shipwreck Relief Society that the society sent £32 of its own fund? to the Bluif on 3rd December, the day after word was received oi tho plight of the survivors. Money fiom the exhibition of tho relics was held in trust for tho survivors, to be forwarded when the addretses were known. There is no Government subsidy on the amount collected : the Government subsidy only holds Tip to a maximum revenue of £200 j which the society has outside | the collection. The delay in j answering telegrams from Mr. Russell was caused by the absence of tlie secretary from Dunedin •in tho Christmas holidays. The society would benefit in no way ; on the contrary, it had expended £32 and expenses while still holding £18 for distribution to the survivors when located.
