VANCOUVER SERVICE. A CONTRACT RENEWED.
<Dy Telrff.-opli. -Press Association.— Copyright. OTTAWA, 10th January. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Dominion Prime Minister, states that the Government has tenewecj "tho 'contract for the carriage of mails between Vancouver and Australia by the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand. The agreement takes effect in July, and the- terms are the same as those of tho contract previously in force. The C4overnm^nt requested acceptance of these terms by New Zealand, but received no reply. \ As originally received the cablegram was_chiefly remarkable for its lack of meaning. On enquiry at the General Post Office' we were informed' that New Zealand simply uses the Vanconver ser* vico by subsidising a, steamer to run between Auckland and Fiji, there connecting with the vessels which run via Vancouver, Fiji, Brisbane, and Sydney. The chief clerk stated that no communication had been received from the Government of th.3 Dominion of Canada which had not been replied to. Ho was at a loss to understand what this particular portion of the message retened to.
