A RAID BY ABYSSINIANS. MERCHANTS PLUNDERED AND KILLED.
A BIG BATTLE. By Tdtgraph.—Press Association.— Copyright MASSOWAH, 10th January. Reports from the Lugh district, in the southern portion of Italian Somahland, state that two thousand Abyssinians raided the territory. Many merchants were plundered and killed. Some of the local tribes sided with the Abyssinians, and others with tho Italians. A battle was fought, in which the losses on both sides were very great. It is believed that, King Menelik did not authorise the raid. Italian Somaliland, in North-East Africa, is separated by the River Jnba from the East Africa Protectorate, (British). In January, 1905, Italy assumed sovereign rights over this territory, paying the Sultan of Zanzibar £144,000 therefor.
