PERSONAL MATTERS.
Captain Mair, of Rotorua, is at j/resent in Wellington. Mr. W. C. Kensington, Under-Secre-tary for Lands, left Wellington yesterday for Auckland. The Mayor of Wellington (Hon. 1. W. Hislop), returned ' froiu the South to-day by the Rotomahana. Lieut. Smythe, of the Permanent Artillery was a passenger from Lyttelton by the Rqtomahana to-day. Sir John Madden, Chief Justice of Victoria, Miss Ruby Madden, and Colonel Campbell left -Wellington for Rotorua to-day. ' Major H. D. Tuson, of the New Zealand Defence Forces, is accompanying j the. vice-regal party on a fishing expedition at Rotorua. Mr. Leslie H. Reynolds, C.E., leaves for the West Coast this afternoon, to take up his residence at Otira Gorge, in connection with the Otira tunnel contract. Mr- H. A. 'M'Gregor, formerly Inspector, of Machinery in Wellington, and an old and inspected resident of the city, is lying seriously ill at his residence in. Macfarlane-street. The Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister for Labour, and Marine, leaves Auckland for Wellington on Monday. Mr. Millar ] has,- during the present week, taken part iii the bowling tournament as a representative of the Wellington Club. Major Holdaway, who has just arrived from . Australia to take charge of the young people's work in the North Island in connection with the Salvation Army, was welcomed last evening »n the Vivianstreet Citadel. Speeches were mad© by several officers and Major and Mrs. Holdaway suitably replied. The Hon. R. M'Nab is the only Government representative located in the capital city to-day. Sir Joseph Ward, who is on tour in the Tutanekai, will be at Picton to-day, and will reach Wellington to-morrow. The Hon. J. M'Gowan is now at Paeroa, the Hon. J. Carroll at Taumaranui, the Hon. Dr. Findhiy at Mount Cook, the Hon. J. A. Milliar at Auckland, and Ihe Hon. G. Fowlds at Rotorua. Mr. R. Hepworth, who has been in charge, of the CliristeliUTcli office of the Valuation Department, has resigned his position, and in a few days goes into business on his own account, as a partner in a commercial firm in that city. Mr. Hepworth hus been in charge of the Valuation Department) the Land and Income Tax Department, and the Advances to Settlers' Department in Christchurch for four years, and has been in the Government servide for 16£ years, part 'of which was spent in Wellington. The Rev. A. M. Johnson, M.A., at present vicar of St. Matthew's Church, Masterton, has been appointed vicar of St. Mark's, Wellington, as- successor to the late Mt. Coffey. ,Mr. Johnson was educated at Gonville and ' Cams. Colleges, Cambridge. Ho was ordained deacon in 1894, and a year later h% was ordained priest by the Biahop of Rochester, and from 1894 to '1896 he was assistant curate of Coulsdon, Surrey. After obtaining his degree of M.A., in 1896, he came to New Zealand as assistant curate of St. Peter's, Wellington, and remained in that post till 1899 A when he was made vicar of Featherston, Graytown, 'and Martinborough. Two years ago he became vicir of Masterton. He is a member of the Standing Committee of the diocese of Wellington, and secretary of the Board of Theological Studies.'
