Mr J. Ammunson has been appointed Crown Lands ranger for the Wellington district. Mi-. O. Mewhinney is gazetted Chief Clerk in tho Lands for Settlements Department. Mr. A. R. Stone's appointment as Chief Clerk in the Inspection of Machinery Department is gazetted. Major S. Boltcm, 2nd regiment Wairaropa, M.R., has been transferred to the active list (unattached) with his present rank. Inspector Ellison left on & visit of inspection to the Wairarapa district to-day. He will return to Wellington on Mondav J Dr. Valintine, Inspector of Hospitals, who has been North will return to Wellington by tho Manawatu train this evening. / ' Mr. F. W. Rowley, Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories, returned last night from a departmental visit to the East Coast. Captain Bollons andj Post, of the Government steamers Hinemoa and Tutaeneki respectively have been appointed sea fishing inspectors. Messrs. F. Cordukes, C. S- Brandon, H. V S. Hadfield, M. M'Lean, and U. J. Lynch are gazetted as members of the Paraparauniu Domain Board. Mr. T. M, Wilford, M.P., who spent the holidays in' Rotorua, arrived at Wanganui from the North to-day, and will reach Wellington to-morrow night. During tho absence from Wellington of Mr. Pollen, TJnder-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, Mr. R. F. Lynch, chief clerk, is acting as Under-Secretary. Mri L. R. Phillips, president of the Auckland Provincial Executive of the Farmers' Union, is expected to return to Auckland, via Australia, about the end of next month. Lieut. -Colonel Loveday, officer commanding public school cadets of tho colony, left for Levin to-day. He will return on Monday. Later in the week ho will leave for Nelson. Admiral and Lady Fawkes, accompanied by Lieutenant Willoughby, arrived in Dunedin last evening, after an enjoyable trip to Queenstown. The party ileaves to-day for Mount Cook. The Rev. A. N. Johnson and Mr. E. Smith, J.P., of the London Missionary Society, accompanied by the Rev. J. King, Australasian organising secretary, will leave for the- South this evening. The Rev. W. Drew, of New Plymouth, has been advised that his son, Mr. D. W. DTew, editor of the Bloemfontein-Friend, has been appointed a menlber of the Legislative Council, Orange River Colony. Mr. S. Coweb, formerly of the Hud-dart-Parker Company's Wellington branch, is returning to New Zealand by the company's new passenger steamer Ulimaroa, which has left Dundee on her maiden voyage out. The Gazette contains the announcement of the appointment of Messrs. John Strauchon, IK Barron, Hon. G. F. Richardson, and Mr. P. E. Cheal to constitute the Surveyors' Bonid. Mrs. Hunter, a Scotswoman who claimed, to be 111 years of age, and who is known to have been at least 106, has just died atf Liverpool. She was a native of Balmaghier, in Kirkcudbright, and married a member of the Galloway militia who served in the Napoleonic wars. _ She remembereu a season of I dearth in her girlhood, when she and her sister, after going all through the parish in search of oatmeal, only got a small quantity, .which was parted with as a favour, and for which they had to pay at the rate of half a guinea a stone. Mr. Alexander Robertson, a wellknown resident of Wellington, died yesr terday, aged 74. He was born in Scotland, where he learned his tiado as a dyer^ and subsequently filled responsible petitions, but in 1861 he emigrated to Vu> toria, and two years later he joined in the gold rush to "The Dunstan," Otago. Afterwards he went to Nelson and there started a business as a dyer. In 1894 he began business in the same line at' Wellington, and has remained in it since. In Nelson he took a prominent part in local politics and friendly socioty affairs. He was a keen reader, and the excellent library which tho Wellington Working Men's Club possesses was in a largo measure built lip under his advice and supervision as a crwmitteeman. Furthor arrangements will be made later on. Mr. J. Frankis Lane, who for twelve yeaTS has occupied the, position of resi. dent secretary to the Citizens' Life Assurance Company in New Zealand, is being transferred to West Australia to take up tho position of manager of the amalgamated business of the Citizens' Life and that of the Mutual Life Association of Australasia. The head office of the company for West Australi.-i is in Perth, and Mr. Lane will, as he has in New Zealand, conduct both the ordinary and industrial branches of tho business. Mr. Lane has been in the service of the company since) its inception twenty-one years ago, passing through all grades to his present excellent position. He leaves with his family on 31st January by theMarama for Sydney, where tliey will spend a month's Holiday, joining the P .and O. steamer Mooltan for Fremnntle on 26th February. Mi-. C. A.
