An appeal to the audience at the \ Opera House on Wednesday night produced £12 2s 9d to help to make an enjoyablo Christmas for the children in, the care of the Rev. Mother Mary Joseph Aubcrt. Mr. T. S. Weeton was to-day advised by Mr. titanfieldt, mine- manager and attorney for the , Talisman Consolidated Company, that a. cablegram had been received from London stating that Mt. Auld has been elected a member of the London Board of Directors. Now is the- time when tho people whoso way in lifo is comparatively smooth are asked to lend a helping hand to loss fortunate brothers and sisters whose path is rugged. Many appeals have been made to the comfortable for gifts to bring a little Yuletido cheer to the sick and poor, and' while the good spirit of generosity is in the people they are asked to remember the consumptive patients at the Otaki Sanatorium. Some of tho inmates are poor in purse as well as health, and are sadly dependent on others for the addition of a trifle of brightness to their daily programme.. They are far from the places where the voices of the Christmas celebrants will be merry, and they, would therefore all the more appreciate any kindness bestowed upon them. Gifts may be sent direct to tho ' secretary at the institution or to Mr. J. Godbor, chairman of the committee. No pains have been spared to give attractions to our Christmas Eve edition, to be published to-morrow. It will contain twenty pages, and the Christmas element predominates. It opens with a characteristic poem, "A Song in Exile," by Mrs. C. Allan Morris, of this city, who also contributes an effective short story, "The Chance," decidedly original in its motive. Mr. Frank Morton, another local author, has a pleasant littlo idyl, "The Dream of the Old Men," the scenes of which are laid in Christchurch and Wellington, and a shorter sketch — some Christmas memories of other lands. The rest of the literary matter is the work of woll-known and popular English authors— matter of which The Post has secured the rights of publication. Charles Bailey, having pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing £512 ]osfrom DougIjs Patrick on tho 4th inst., appeared on mnnnd before Mr. Riddoll, S.M., this morning for sentence. Mr. Jackson called evidence to show tho previous good cknaftei of the accused, who had refunded the money, as he had intended to do from tho first. His Worship considered that some- deterrent in" tho shape of a substantial penalty should be indicted, and imposed a iine of £5, or in default fourteen days' imprisonment. A fortnight was given in which lo pay the fine. George Roche, for iii6obriety, was lined 10s, or in. dolault forty-eight' hours' i imprisonment, and on a second chargo j of entering licensed premises, being a prohibited person, he was convicted and lined £2 and 7s costs, with an alternative of seven days' imprisonment.
