MISSIONS TO SEAMEN.
A most enjoyable concert was arranged by Mr. Kerr for the host, Mr. F. W. liaybittle, at tho Missions to Seamen last night. The institute was crowded in every part. Eighteen men took the pledge, consequent upon a temperance address delivered by Mr. Moore, entitled "Cutting the Painter." Seamen from the Delphic and Avon won a conundrum competition held during the evening. The following contributed items to tho programme : — Mrs. Lewis, Misses B Elvine, Fieldhouse,' M. Cunningham, Messrs. Kerr and Pickles (Delphic). Miss B. Elvine presided afc the piano.
The Wellington Harbour Board received the following tenders for contract 148, for hydraulic jiggers and jigger cranes for the stores on the King's W,harf :— A. and T. Burt, Ltd., £3702 (accepted) ; the Sydney Hydraulic and General Engineering Company, Ltd., £3738; Richardson, and Blair", £3893 10s ; S. Luke and' Company, Ltd., £4064 : Palmer Engineering Company, Ltd., £7031 10s. The engineer's estimate was £4040. The death Ls recorded of Mr. John Vautier, who has been prominently connected wilih the Ilawkes Bay district in the past fifty years. He took an active interest in local politics, " partieulaily in the Napier Harbour Board affairs. He was 74 years of age (says a Press Association telegram). A land dispute, coming from Taihape, was practically settled out of court this morning. The" land in question is situated in Huia-strcet, Taihape, and the parties were Gilbert and another v. Batham and others, Mr. F. G. Bolton appearing for plaintiffs, and Mr. Montcaut for the defendants. Mr. Justice Button made an order by consent that the caveat, the subject of' the action, be withdrawn as to the land comprised in the transfer of Clarkson and Hedges, and shall remain unaffected as to the balance of tho laird under caveat. The Hope of Wellington Tent of Rechabilcs will hold a meeting on Friday evening.
