MAIL MATTERS.

* AUCKLAND POINTS OUT DELAYS. fßi Telegraph.— Special to The Post.] AUCKLAND, This Day. During an interview with the Prime Minister prior to his departure from Auckland, a- Star representative drew attention to the fact that the proposed time-table on the Auckland-Wcllingon line when the North Trunk is completed would mean that the Auckland mails for tho South Island would have to remain in Wellington, for twelve- hours. The train reached the capital at 8 a.m. daily, and the ferry steamers left for Christchurch at about 8 p.m. Sir Joseph stated that this delay would bo experienced, and the only way to avoid it under present arrangements would bo to have a. special steamer service, which the present business did not warrant. All the other mails from the North Island, including those from Now Plymouth, Wanganui, Palmerston, and Napier, were fixed to catch the steamer at the same, time. "It may be," ho continued, "that later on wo shall start tho train from the North a little later. Wo may find! that necessary, but that would necessitate travelling during tho greater part of the day following that of ombaTkation. There arc two alternatives — either to leave at midday and arrive at a.m., or to loavo at 10 p.m. and arrive- at 6 p.m. next day. It is just a question of which I is most convenient, and these matters i will adjust i themselves^ when the service hrib started." The- interviewer also pointed out thai the Sue/, mails from London to Auckland) by the delay of a day on the way to Sydney had on several occasions lately just missed the Sydney-Auckland steamer, which meant sover/il days' dclny in delivery. Sir Joseph stated that this was a matter that the Government could not control, the delivery of Now Zealand j mails depending on tho airival of tho. P. and O. and Orient steamers in Australia, lie would, however, look into the matter, and' see if anything -could bo done.
