|>RBS3 ASSOOIATION*.] DIFFICULTIES AHEAD. GISBORNE, 27th September. Mr. Walter Grace left Gisbornc this afternoon overland for" Wairoa by motor. As the road is at present impassable for motors with the usual equipment, Mr. Grace has adopted a devico which he feels certain will enable him to overcome the difficulties to bo encountered He has had attached to the car on cither side a pair of 10 feet planks hinged together. * They are doubled up in v shape", and ordinarily serve, as mudguards. When a bad bit of road has 'to t be encountered the guards arc unshipped and used as a bridge for the motor car wheels to run on. Beyond .Waerengaokuri there is one length of "porridgy" road extending for two and a half miles, and another length further on extending for one mile and n. half, making four miles of stick mud that cannot be avoided. . BRAVERY RECOGNISED. AUCKLAND, 27th September. At the municipal chambers to-night the Mayor of Auckland presented Mr.Lawrence Frost, chief engineer of the Kapanui, with a Royal Humane Society's medal and certificate for gallantry in connection with ' the collision between the Kapanui and 1 Cla^ymoro in Auckland Harbour on Chrisbm&s-Eve, 1905. Mr. Frost was off duty ai'tHe time of the collision, but at 'Considerable peril rushed from the deck to the boiler room, which i he entered in total darkness, crawled along the top qf the boiler, , turned off ■the top valve, and returned to the deck. He only had time to grasp a life buoy ivhen -the- vessel made a plunge and disappeared drawing him down in the suction. When he came up he found Captain Southgate in difficulties iind handed him 1 his' lito-buoy.
