A REPLY.

PROTECTION AND PROHIBITION. DEAR PRICES. By Tdcciaph. — Fre«3 Association. — Copj right. Received September 28, 7.49 a.m.) LONDON, 27th September. In a letter to The Times, the Commonwealth Agent in London, Captain Collins, has made- a full reply to the correspondent "Zollvercin," who in the same journal declared that Mr Deakiu (the Federal Prime Minister) was a bondsman of the Labour party, that the tariff showed Mr. Deakin's complete- subjection to Labour, that the Federal Proniicr had shed his Imperialist ideas, and , that tariff reform in Australia was only a stalking horse for Protection, buttered with Socialism. FURTHER DUTIES ON BRITISH GOODS. MORE PROTESTS. LONDON, 27th September. A large meeting of the Australasian s&ction of the London Chamber of Commerco and others interested, adopted resolutions protesting against the imposition of further duties on British goods which, despite tho financial support accorded to Australian industries by merchants and investors, will seriously harm manufacturing industries in the United Kingdom. The meeting also declared that tho preferenco given to British goods, although small, v/as thankfully received, in the hope that it would shortly be increased. Another resolution declared that tho sudd-en levying of new duties — especially on goods bought before the now tariff became operative — would cause considerable- inconvenience and loss in Australia and Britain ..unless the time of levying was postponed. COMMENT ON A RESOLUTION. (Received September 28, 7.4 a.m.) LONDON, 27th September. The Daily Chronicle declares that the resolution adopted by the Australasian section of the London Chamber of Commerco will only confirm tho present Commonwealth Government in the belief that their tariff policy is right. The paper adds : — "Thoy want prohibition, not protection. There will soon be a reaction brought about by dear prices caused by stagnation and a decline in railway business, not by the British traders' protests."
