At the meeting of tho trustees of tho Benevolent Institution this afternoon, Mr. A. H. Truebridge, tho newly-apt pointed secretary, was present, and was. formally welcomed by tho trustees. In reply, ho -remasked that he and his wife would do their best to deserve the good >vish«s of the trustees. H-e added that he hoped to present a. fuller -report at the next meeting, and in a brief report said that tho inmates would liko to see visitors — their life was apt to become ratheT monotonous, and a few fresh faces brightened tlvem up. Snnday afternoons wore a little dull, and many of the townspeople might spare an hour or two with the inmates, many of whom are in indifferent health. The trustees agreed witli this view, und also agreed that the now master^ should spend at least a week in making himself familiar with his new duties. In tho meanwhile Mr. J. E. Pago will carry on the actual duties of secretary. The champion brass band of Australia, the Newcastle City Band, which is on its way to the contest in Christchurch, is duo in Wellington from Sydney to-morrow morning by tho steamer Maheno. Tho visitors have a fino record in Australia, and aro said to bn a remarkably strong combination. The majority of tho players are working miners. Arrangements have been made for the band to give a performance at tho Basin Reserve to-morrow evening, when tho selections will comprise two of tho v test pieces. A collection will ho taken up on the grounds, half the proceeds of which will bo given to the hospital. A meeting of Australian residents has been called for to-night to make arrangements, for welcoming tho band tomorrow. Tho Wellington Stock Exchange reports tho following sales to-day: — Leyland, O'Brien Timber, £2 6s (sellers, £2 6s 6d) ; Talisman, £1 10s 6d. There aro Bollors of W'aihis at £8 19s. A theoretical examination under the auspices of the London College of Music is to bo held next June. An advertisement relating to tho examination appears in our advprtising columns. Perhaps tho most important, and certainly tne most largely attended, congress of leaders o£ the Salvation Army hold in the colony is to opon in Christchurch n-ext Friday, and the sittings will extend over ono weok. The congress will be attended by Commissioner M'Kic, Lieut.-TJolonel Hoskins, and an Austnt* lian staff, and some 250 of New Zealand's officers. There will also bo about 808 bandsmen in attendance, including some 300 from tho North Island. During tho course of tho congress theTO will be a three- days' conference of officers, and *• new and greatly enlarged Maternity Home is to bo opened in Christchurch. After the congress, Commissioner M'Kie cornea to Wellington, arriving on the 16th inst., and holding « special mission here. The clearances through tho Wellington banks during the past week totalled £1,407,943, as compared with £1,314,524 during the corresponding week of lnst yoiir.
