ANNIVERSARY REGATTA RACES. The Port Nicholson Yacht Club decided .on Saturday 2nd and 3rd class yacht races and coal hulks boats event which wore postponed from Anniversary Day. An ideal south south-west sailing breeze prevailed. Tho following boats entered for the second-class event: — Syren (Swan and Tompsott), sci"; Atalanta (W. H. Hales) <Jmin; Mahina (Dr. W. • Fell), ■ smin ; Kotiri (Pctherick Bros.), smin ; Mawhiti V(B.V (B. Clarke). 7min ; Muritai (Hoggard and Co.), lOmin ; Wairero (Scott and Smith), Bmin ; Janet (Dr. R. 'H. Makgill), Bmin ; Nancy Stair (J. Davies), Smin ; Flora (H. Hewitt), lßmin. All started except tho Kotiri. A good start" was effected fiom which tho Syren soon took tho lead with tho Janet close bchinti. The Korokcfto' buoy was lounded in line stylo, tho boats being well together, but ou the boat to Hope Shoal buoy, they becamo separated into two bunches. Tho Syren still held' the lead, followed closely by tho Janet, Mahina, and Atalanta. The others wero having a race by themselves a fow minutes in tho rear. The Syren rounded Hope Shoal lirst, with the Janet still clinging to her, and arrived home first followed by tho Janet a minute lator ; with the Atalanta third, and yiahinn. ioovth. With her time -allowance of Smin tho Janet takes fiist prize of £5, the Syren takes £2 10s as second prize, and the Mahina £1 as third prize. Tho finish ing times were — Syren 5 hours 4min lbscc, Janet 5 hours 15scc, Atalanta 5 hours 9min 15scc, Mahina 5 Hours lOmin, Wairere O hc^urs islmin, Nancy Stair 5 hours 22m in 15sec, Muritai 5 hours 25min. "siawhiti 5 h*urs 25min 45sec, and Flora 5 hours 29min. Tho following five boats started in the third-class event : — Taipari (Brewen and Highet), scr ; Malua (A. G. Burns), scr ; Karaka (Lambert and M'Kecgan), 16min ; May (Chisholm Bros.), 20miu ; Ibex (C. Nelson), 20min. The Malua got the best of a good start followed by the Taipari, Karaka, Ibex, and May. Korokoro was rounded in this order with only about 4 minutes separating first and last boats. On tho beat to windward tho Taipari soon took the lead, and rounded' Point Halswell first with v comfortable lead, which she maintained till the finish, and which entitles her to £5 as first prize. Tho Ibex was secondhand takes £2 10s, and finishing times were :— Taipari 4 hours tho Karaka takes third prize of £1. Tho finishinf times were: — Tnipr.ri 4 hours 42min 15sec, JMalnu 4 .hours 56min, Karaka 5 hours llmin, Ibex 5 hours llmin 7acc, and May 5 hours 28min 30sec. Six boats started in the event . for coal hulks boats, and an interesting race resulted in a win for tho boat off the Elinor Vornon by 15 seconds. The finishing times were — Elinor Vernon 4 hoars 40miu 15sec, CoTomandcl 4 hours 40m in 30sec, Arawata 4 hours 40min, Cceola 4 hours 52min, Prince of Wales 4 hours 59min, Tobias 5 hours lmin. Mr. J. Moffat' framed the handicaps, and Mr. T. A. Ryan was starter, judge, and timekeeper. Races will be held for second and third-class yachts next Saturday afternoon.

A curious mistake has arisen in regaTd to a sewing machine for the Ohiro Benevolent Home. At tho last meeting the trustees passed a vote of thanks to the Singer Company for the gift of a machine, but at a meeting this afternoon it was remarked that tie gift was really intended for tho Home foT Aged Needy, to which ifc had sinco been removed. Tho trustoss are atill in hope that the Singer Company will exhibit similar generosity on their behalf. As notified in another column, the Auckland City Salvation Army Brass Band is to give a concert this evening in the Victoria Hall, Newtown. The band, which has just completed a month's tour of the North Island, and is on its way to tho congress at Christchurch, comprises thirty-six instruments, and thero aro several vocalists amongst its members. To-morrow afternoon the band is to be welcomed by tho Mayor at the Town Hall, from 3 to 4 o'clock it will give a concert on tho Basin lieservo, and in the evening a farewell programme will bo given in tho Vivianstreot Citadel. The Hydraulic Hand Milker Company, Ltd., which controls Mr. G. Hutchingon's ingenious invention, has just decided upon a forward policy. The directors have allotted 2000 preferential shares issued with tho object of carrying out tho new policy, which includes a decision to soil the foreign Tights, on royalty terms, to the Alpha Separator Company, of Sweden, and to send Mr. Hutchinson abroad to demonstrate tho working of the invention. ' The Alpha Company, which has been in treaty for the world's rights, is the biggest of the world's operafois in dairy machinory. The Now Zealand rights vrero disposed of some timo ago. Mr. Hutchinson goes South to get plant ready with which to carry out his demonstrations in Europe, and ho will probably leave for the Old Country about tho ond of this month. A temporary compromise lias boon arrived at in connection with the objection lodged in the Supreme Court by Mr. W. H. Field against further excavation of tho bank at tho back of the new Commercial Hotel on Lambton-qiwy and in front 'of his residertco on Wellington-ter-race. The arrangement como to is that tho work is to be allowed to piocoed up to a, certain point, subject to the iipproval of Mr. Field's engineeis. When that point liiis been arrived at, the engineers on both sides will nieot to decide us to what further work can bo carried out without endangering the safety of Mr. Field's property. In tho meantime, My. Field's injunction w ill not be removed fiom the Supremo Court file.
