A PLAYER SUSPENDED. CHRISTOHURCH, 2nd February. A special meeting of the Canterbury Cricket Association was hold to-night with regard to tho trouble that has occurred botween S. T. Callaway, the well-known bowler, and the committee of the association. Callaway failed to play for Canterbury in the match with Wellington, and the committee of the association, at a meeting on Tuesday night, after hoaring an explanation from him, resolved that the hon. secretary of the association should bo instructed to omit Callaway's namo from the list of representative players availablo for the Now Zealand matches against the Marylebono team. On this resolution, the council this evening passed the following motion:—"That in view of S. T. Callaway publishing a letter written by himself to the _ Canterbury Cricket Association containing offensive and misleading statements, this committee suspend Callaway from taking part in any cricket under the jurisdiction of the Canterbury Cricket Association till h» sees fit to publicly withdraw his letter." xx L Th rt 'H'pute between S. T. Callaway and ™«k et Asnociation (says Ohristehuich Truth) doesn t reflect a, great deal of credit on either side, but, if anything, Callaway has the best of it. He is quite content to be regarded as a professional cricketer, and looks upon his skill with the ball as an •Bsofc. On the other hand, the Cricket Association, which is generally hard up, think. CalUway should find sufficient reward in th« honour of playing for Canterbury But it doeni't follow that a m*n •hould b» expected to ooKe patriotism from every per» because the Cricket Association can t afford to p«y him for hit services. Callaway also had a, grievance with th» association because a, complimentary ticket for his wife was refused We do not suppose the refusal w»s dictated by personal motive*, but was just one of those stupid examples of economy that a tactful secretary would know better than to practise. Anyhon-, tho association has lost Callaway'a services, for which the englishmen will, no doubt, be grateful.
