Clenjenceau inadvertently confessed that the Government's course throughout the religious difficulty was incoherent, which was not his fault. Thereupon M- Briand quitted the Chamber, and threatened to resign. 'M. Clemence&u, in a later speech, amply apologised for the slip, which he said was made in the heat of debate, and a reconciliation was effected.
