The Native Land Court, consisting of Chief Judge Palmer and Mr. Heke, •M.H.R., assessor, sat yesterday afternoon to consider various questions 'which have arisen in regard to land taken for the Otnki Sanatorium. The area of land taken by the Wellington Hospital Board | for the purposes of the institution was about fifty acres, owned by natives, and application was made 1 to th© Native Land Court to assess its value and to determine to whom the compensation was to be paid. It was then found that souw Europeans had purchased some undivided portions of the lend from the Maoris, and had leased other areas on which improvements had been effected. One of the purchasers claimed that only the Supremo Court or the Compensation Court could asses* too interests of the ■Europeans, and that the Native Land Court could only aseee* the interests of the Maoris, Mr. Quick appeared for the Hospital Board, and put ro th© Government valuation, which placed the value of the lahd at £15 per acre. Mr. Kirk appeared for Mr- M'Beth, and Mr. tJpham appeared for a, number of native owner*. Considerable evidence was token as to the value of the land, and the court reserved its decision till Thursday morning.
